Faculty Scholarship
The University’s Governance Document places the responsibility of defining “scholarship” to individual units. During the 2002-2003 academic year (March 10, 2003) unit faculty voted to accept the recommendations presented by an ad hoc faculty group charged to make inquiry into the literature and hold conversations with faculty regarding a unit -wide definition of scholarship. Based on the work of Ernest Boyer, the unit adapted the following:
- Scholarship of Discovery – Traditional “new knowledge” such as research and scholarly investigation. Examples: presentation and/or publications of original research; juried journal articles; textbooks; book reviews; chairing and reading dissertations.
- Scholarship of Integration – “disciplined work that seeks to interpret, draw together and bring new insight to bear on original research.” Examples: collaboration with diverse disciplines in the direction of original research through interdisciplinary programs and dissertations; interdisciplinary course development
- Scholarship of Application – the effort to “connect theory and practice.” Examples: service as Board of Examiners for state and/or national accreditation of teacher education programs; service on SACS accreditation teams; service on committees for Kentucky Teacher and/or Principal Internship programs; service to other professional groups such as state Scholastic Audit Team and state Continuing Education Option cadres
- Scholarship of Teaching – the effort “to bring the most honest and most intelligible account of new knowledge to all who will try to learn.” Examples: development of new courses or redesign of existing courses; successful teaching as recognized by student evaluations; range of teaching assignment by content or program; course content representative of the objectives.
